3 Ways to Fight Wrinkles in Your Sleep and Wake Up Looking Refreshed
The importance of sleep cannot be underemphasized, especially when it comes to our beauty routines. During our sleep cycle, our skin cells go into repair mode—“sleep enables the body to reverse everyday free radical damage through cellular renewal,” according to Dr. Murad. The result? A regular, healthy sleep schedule helps reduce fine lines, improve skin clarity, and boost collagen and elastin.
That’s pretty major. Unfortunately, many of us experience work-related stress (and late-nighters), and with increased urbanization, we’re exposed to more environmental aggressors than we’d care to think about. So while sleep is arguably one of the most important beauty ingredients, it wouldn’t hurt to lend our skin a helping hand as we hit the sheets.
The following are three ways to optimize your beauty sleep and enhance your complexion.
Exfoliate before bed. In addition to removing your makeup before bed (a no-brainer!), it also helps to gently exfoliate skin (at least a few times a week). Sloughing off dead skin cells helps promote skin clarity and allows your evening treatments to more easily penetrate skin. Try an exfoliating powder in place of a harsh scrub.
Use vitamin A/retinol. Retinol is a special ingredient (most dermatologists swear by it) because it helps skin cells “behave” and look more normal, resulting in a younger-looking, more even complexion. Plus, it also fights acne. Check out Paula’s Choice 1% Retinol Treatment.
Sleep with a sleep masque. A sleep masque is designed to give your skin an extra dose of beneficial ingredients. Many can be layered over your favorite serums like a thick moisturizer. Natural beauty brand Juara offers an excellent range of sleep masques—the Java Plum and Avocado Nourishing Mask is my favorite!
