Is Beta-Glucan The Next Hyaluronic Acid? Where To Buy This Wonder Ingredient
Naturally found in oats, the bran of cereal grains, mushrooms, and certain yeasts and fungi, Beta-glucan is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredient. Until recently, scientists believed that the large molecules of beta-glucan couldn’t penetrate skin, rendering it an ineffective active ingredient. Newer research tells a different story, however.
In a study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, results showed that beta-glucan, “despite its large molecular size, deeply penetrated the skin into the epidermis and dermis.” Participants in the study applied a beta-glucan product to skin. After 8 weeks, there was “a significant reduction of wrinkle depth and height, and overall roughness.”
Beta-glucan is now celebrated for its ability to soothe and hydrate skin while potentially boosting collagen production, too. According to dermatologist Dendy Engelman, "some studies show that it helps in the treatment of dermatitis, eczema, bed sores, wounds, and burns.”
If beta-glucan sounds like another version of skincare superstar hyaluronic acid, you’re on to something. Ann Son, founder of JKosmmune, an innovative skin and hair care brand, the two ingredients are quite similar—barring one important difference: "Hyaluronic acid (HA) is very similar in structure, but it has subtle differences that make it less ideal, "Tests have shown beta-glucan is 20% more hydrating than HA at the same concentration. With extra water, beta-glucan can plump up the skin and make the skin feel more supple."
With that in mind, Son formulated all of her products with beta-glucan as the active ingredient in all of JKosmmune’s easy-to-use, straightforward products. Using 99.9% pure beta-glucan, the JKosmmune line helps mitigate the damage pollution and UV rays cause skin by supporting skin’s natural barrier. JKosmmune’s beta-glucan is sourced from mushrooms using a patented method that avoids introducing chemical continuation, meaning that the beta-glucan in the JKosmmune line is uniquely pure.
Moreover, the cruelty-free company follows an 8-free system: all products are free of paraben, ethanol, talc, mineral oil, silicon oil, benzophenone, phenoxyethanol, paraffin, sulfates, and color additives. The ingredients that JKosmmune does use follow strict safety standards: each ingredients scores a 2 or less on the Environmental Working Group’s hazard scale (on which a rating of 10 denotes highest level of hazard).
Fortunately for us, JKosmmune products are relatively affordable, especially when compared with other luxury skincare lines. JKosmmune Serum is under $50, and the brand’s pH-balanced enzyme cleansing powder is $26.
